Chapter Fifteen

Callie let her arms drop to her sides and stared out at the empty stadium. Something wasn’t right. She couldn’t put her finger on it, but something just didn’t feel right.

Tori came hurrying over to her. “What is it?” she asked.

Callie shrugged. “I wish I could tell you.”

Kolby and Xander came striding out onto the stage together. Callie smiled at Tori. “How can I claim that there’s anything wrong? Everything sounds great.” She jerked her chin toward the guys, who had almost reached them. “We have these two and the rest of them watching over us to make sure that nothing bad can happen. But still…”

Tori nodded. “I feel it, too. I couldn’t tell you what it is. But there’s something… Wrong.”

Xander frowned at her. “What kind of wrong?”

She shrugged and looked at Callie.

Callie shook her head. “That’s the trouble. We don’t know.”

Kolby came straight to her and put his hands on her shoulders. Looking down into her eyes, he said, “You don’t have to do this show, you know. It’s not as though you’d be letting anyone down – no one even knows that you’re going to be here tonight.”

“No. I want to. I want to do it. Sound-check was great.” She turned to look over her shoulder at the band and the other backup singers. “Everyone was great. And it’s not as though I can put my finger on anything.” She made a face at him. “For all we know, it could just be me. I might just be letting it all get to me.”

“And no one could blame you if you were,” he said.

“Maybe not. But I’d blame me. I’ve let this crazy guy steal too much already. He’s stolen a whole chunk of my life, and more than that, he’s stolen most of the tour – from me, and from all the people who bought tickets to see me. I can’t bring back all the dates that we missed, but I am committed to doing these last couple.”

She looked around the arena again. “Tonight, this place will be full; I owe it to these people to give them a show.” She smiled at him. “I’m not scared. I know you’re here.”

He tightened his grip on her shoulders and drew her closer, pressing a kiss to her forehead. “And you know that I, and the rest of the guys, will do everything within our power to keep you safe. I’m just saying that you don’t have to do it if you don’t want to.”

“I know. But I do want to.”

She looked over to the wings, where Ty and Ace were having an animated conversation with Brock and Tony.

“What’s going on?” she asked Kolby.

He chuckled. “Having Ace around has shaken everything up.”

She raised an eyebrow.

“In a good way,” Kolby added. “I think all the guys want to prove to an old-timer that they’re just as good as he ever was. Ace is happy to be here and helping, and just by the nature of who he is, he’s giving everyone a master class on how it really should be done.
